About John Floyd

There are not many people who know what they want to do. They find themselves in jobs that they hate, without any idea of where they would rather be. I am not one of those people. I have been making video games since I was very young, before I even owned a console or computer -- I made games out of paper and cardboard, true "paper" Mario games that matched the experience as best as I knew how. When my family bought a computer I taught myself Pascal so that I could program games, subversive games, games with humor and attitude and stick figure graphics. I also began to compose music, and played Final Fantasy VI for the first time... I was hooked. Hooked on games. Fascinated by Nobuo Uematsu's incredible score. A little later I decided what I wanted to do with my life: I was going to compose music for, and design, video games -- the medium least considered to be an art form yet the medium with the most untapped potential. The potential to move people, to inspire them, to educate, to bring people together from all over the world in a way that no Monet, no Hemingway, no Chopin, no Crumb, no Kirosawa could ever achieve.

I like to think that there is no such thing as bad music, but it is of the utmost importance to me that the music and sound effects that I create fit the circumstance. There is no style that I would not use, no technique too conventional or radical to make the sound fit the scene. Whether it is being performed by symphonies or cellphones, music should be art, the vibrations a physical manifestation of emotions.

I have been involved in various musical activities for as long as I can remember. As a performer, I have been a part of various choral, jazz, rock, and orchestral ensembles. I was a recording technician for three years. I studied composing, conducting, and music theory at Binghamton University and graduated with honors for my composition "Planet X: The Return of Nibiru." I'm currently involved in freelance composition and sound design projects.
